‘Yes? I have no idea’: teacher turns containing epistemic disclaimers in upper primary school whole-class discussions

Data from whole-class discussions in Dutch upper primary school show that teachers occasionally explicitly take downgraded epistemic stances through disclaimers such as ‘ik weet het niet’ (English: I don’t know (it)), which contrasts with their institutionally assigned authority. In the current study, we have collected turns occur, and analysed them using conversation analysis. our analyses, focused on positions of varying ways these influence subsequent course interaction. We found teachers’ occur initiating turns, facilitating student participation, but also responsive turns. The latter vary extent to they facilitate ranging participation a similar way blocking further contributions altogether. This study furthermore demonstrates employ navigate two teacher roles, namely those authority, facilitator whole class-discussions.
